Window Glass Replacement

You may be considering window glass replacement for a number of different reasons. The most random reason would be that there is a window in your home that has been broken. Flying baseballs are legion. And during storm and wind season, flying debris can break your windows. But maybe your windows have not been broken by a projectile but rather they are simply getting very old and it is time to replace them with shiny new windows that will wow your neighbors and will enhance the value of your home. Or maybe you are growing increasingly concerned about how our consumption of energy is a threat to the planet and want to replace your old energy-leaking windows with modern thermal windows. It may be a combination of some of these reasons.

Even if energy efficiency was not at the top of your list when you first started your search, you need to give careful thought to whether you should not invest in modern thermal windows for your window glass replacement project. The windows in your home are one of the greatest sources of energy loss that you have. Indeed, without modern thermal insulation, your windows may as well be large holes in your wall. The energy loss from windows usually occurs in three ways. The first way in which energy loss occurs is that energy directly conducts through the frames and glass. Through this process of conduction, heat escapes your home in the Winter and it invades your home in the Summer. The second form of energy loss is that radiation transfers through your windows. In the Summer, unwanted solar radiation infiltrates through your windows and makes your home uncomfortably warm. In the Winter, your family and pets will lose body heat that will leak out of your home through your windows. The third form of energy loss is due to air leaks in your windows.

You can reduce each of these forms of energy loss by replacing your existing single pane windows with modern double glazing or triple pane windows. By choosing the best replacement windows, you will not only save yourself serious money but you will do something positive for the environment.

Double-glazing windows have two panes of glass that are hermetically-sealed. There is air trapped between the glass and this air is what gives double-glazing windows their insulation qualities. Some double-glazing windows have an inert gas, such as krypton or argon, injected between the window panes. Gas-filled windows have even greater insulation and they are good at reducing window condensation.

Double glazing windows generally have external Low-Emissivity (or “Low-E”) glazing. Low-E glass is covered with an ultra-thin transparent metal that blocks or absorbs solar radiation. If you are in the market for window glass replacement, double glazing windows are an excellent choice.

The most energy efficient thermal windows on the market are triple pane windows. These windows have three layers of glass with two layers of air trapped between them. Therefore, they have even greater insulation and can result in greater energy savings. Gas-filled triple pane windows are also available.

If your only concern is the environment and a desire to reduce your energy usage by any means necessary, you should replace your existing windows with triple pane windows. They provide phenomenal energy efficiency and are considered the best replacement windows. But many desire to purchase thermal windows for the purpose of saving on their energy bills. For them, the decision whether to purchase double glazing windows or triple pane windows will turn on how many more years’ worth of reduced energy bills it will take to make up for the substantially greater cost of triple pane windows.

Whether you opt for two panes or three, by choosing thermal windows you are choosing a higher upfront cost than if you chose normal windows. If you can bear that threshold cost, however, you will actually save money over time. The substantial reduction in your energy bills, both to heat your home in the cool months and to cool your home in the warm months, will not only pay for the cost of the windows but will continue to save you money for years to come.

The upfront cost of your thermal window glass replacement project will be offset, in part, by the up to $1,500 federal tax credit for qualifying energy efficient home improvements. Also check with your utility company, because many of them offer rebates and incentives if you install thermal windows.

If you do not want to entirely replace your windows, one relatively inexpensive alternative is to buy a window glass replacement kit. This will give you some cost savings and greater energy efficiency without the high cost of complete window glass replacement. Make sure your window glass replacement kit comes with fitted jamb liners that will create an airtight seal with your current window frames.

There are many quality window glass replacement companies that can give you expert guidance on what types of windows you should purchase and that can do an expert job installing them. But if you choose to perform your window glass replacement yourself, this is certainly something that is doable. Look for the many resources on the Internet for “how-to” videos and tutorials. The vendor that sold you the windows may also be able to provide you with instructional materials. If you purchase from a retail vendor, you can ask questions or see if they have tutorials for you. Internet vendors may likewise have tutorials on their websites. And do not forget the wonders of Youtube.

Choose quality thermal windows for your window glass replacement project and you will save money, help the environment, make your home more comfortable, and reduce the level of outside street noise in your home. You will be very happy with your decision.
