Everyone is focused on energy efficiency as a money-saving home improvement these days, but not enough people consider the humble storm window panel as a component of their plan. Replacing your existing single pane windows with double pane or triple pane windows is your best option. But if you choose not to replace your windows, careful use of storm windows may provide necessary insulation.

Storm windows were originally designed to withstand high winds and heavy storm conditions. They serve as an alternative to heavy wood shutters. Over time, storm windows have also become prized for an inexpensive way to add energy efficiency to windows. Storm windows have been shown to insulate your windows and reduce unwanted energy transfer during both hot and cold months.

There are several varieties of storm windows on the market. If you want the least expensive storm windows, look for plastic ones. Plastic storm windows are commonly used in apartment complexes. Plastic storm windows are hard to break but lack longevity. They often do not last more than a season. But given the cost difference, replacing them every year may still be a good choice.

Glass storm windows are a more long lasting solution. They also offer greater visibility than plastic windows. The downside of glass windows is that they are fragile and much easier to break. Understand, however, that these are still storm windows and much stronger than normal glass windows.

Plexiglass storm windows are light in weight but also quite durable. They are easy to install, and, like glass windows, offer excellent visibility. Perhaps the only major downside to plexiglass windows is that they can scratch easily.

Storm windows are an economical solution to your energy efficiency needs. They will not only protect your home from harsh weather, but will reduce your energy bills.
