Temporary Hair Dye: Do-It-Yourself Dyeing Your Hair at Home

By

So, you have decided to dye or your hair at home with temporary hair dye. This hub is a great place to get your start.

Before you start down this road, do consider whether you would not rather have a salon help you with this. Salons are expensive, and for many this is the primary reason they choose to apply temporary hair dye at home. This is certainly reasonable and if you elect this option then start here. But salons are more likely to get it right the first time, they have much more experience at this than you do, and they can provide you with great advice about what color of hair dye would go well with your existing hair. They are especially helpful if you intend to bleach your hair given that this is a more involved and permanent process. Whether you choose to apply your temporary hair dye at home or go to salon is entirely up to you.

If you elect to apply your temporary hair dye at home, first, you need to decide the color you want your hair to turn out. Buy any additional products that you will need to complete your dyeing session based on the directions found on your primary coloration product. If it indicates that you should have a certain type of container to mix the product in, be sure that you have that container available.

Color selection is an art in itself. Remember that temporary hair dye does not itself lighten your natural hair color. Rather, it coats your hair with pigment. So if you have darker hair and want to make your hair a vibrant shade of some other color, you will generally need to bleach your hair first. Although temporary hair dye will wash out of your hair over time, bleaching is permanent. Moreover, bleaching can damage your hair, especially if done improperly. Make sure you proceed with care. Some people have dark hair and want to merely add a tinge or a dark blend to their hair. For example, perhaps you have black hair but want to give it a bluish case. In that case, you may want to experiment with applying hair dye directly on your hair without bleaching.

Once you have assembled all of your product, make sure you read all of the instructions through before you open any of the liquids. If you have never done anything like this to your own hair or helped someone else dye or bleach their own hair, enlist someone to help who has managed this sort of procedure on their own hair in the past. As a general rule, it is a good idea to have someone's help. Make it a temporary hair dye party and take turns!

The process will go more smoothly if you lay out the products to be used in the order they are to be used and if you establish a procedure that you will be following before you begin. Check at this stage to see if the product you have chosen tells you to wash and/or condition your hair prior to beginning the dyeing process. This is an excellent time to take care of that step so that you will be ready for the actual dyeing process to begin.

This is also a good stopping point if you decide to watch a quick online video outlining how this process ideally works. Check the box your product came on; many companies now put their websites on the box for customers to refer to for information and help. Some companies even offer a customer service line to help answer questions of customers who are in the middle of using their product. Youtube can also be an excellent resource.

Now, you have come to the point when it’s time to fish or cut bait—to open the product and begin to apply it exactly as directed, or to take a deep breath and reschedule the session. Maybe you need extra time to carry out a preliminary step such as prepping your hair to be sure that the color takes or the bleach will be effective.

If the box tells you to bleach your hair over several sessions before attempting to apply temporary hair dye (as may be the case if you are starting with a dark color), follow that step. When you are dealing with your appearance, don’t skip steps to save time. Follow the rules to get the most out of your product!!

If you decide that you are ready to go through with the process, be sure that you are armed with a wet clean up towel as you begin to apply the product; this will be necessary if you need to wipe your eyes or face for any reason. Don’t skip any steps along the way. If the product calls for a timer and you don’t have an actual timer available, remember that most modern cell phones have a timer function as part of their standard operating system.

It is helpful to test the temporary hair dye on a swatch of your hair before you apply it to all of your hair. If something goes terribly wrong, you can always try again. Or it may be time to find a hair salon and help them fix it. The biggest warning I would offer is to exercise particular care in the bleaching process. Do not leave the bleach in too long. And, most importantly, take a deep breath, put on some favorite music, and have fun !!!
